Police reinforced deployments in Khayelitsha in Cape Town on Saturday after the murder of a man in the RR section sparked shooting incidents that left 11 people dead.
Western Cape acting police commissioner, Major-General Thembesile Patekile, has ordered the mobilisation of their 72-hour activation plan to hunt down the shooters.
According to a police statement, the ‘tit-for-tat shootings began after the body of the first victim was found in Banzi Street in Site B at around 10 am on Saturday. The deceased had sustained several gunshot wounds and a firearm and a substantial amount of cash were found next to him.
“In a second incident that is believed to be a retaliation attack to (sic) the first murder, two Somali nationals were shot at on Saturday afternoon. One died on the scene and the other was seriously wounded and taken to a medical facility,” said Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
She said in the RR Section of Khayelitsha, three other males were shot dead later in the afternoon in a shooting police say was linked to the previous two shootings.
Later on, two men were killed in a shooting at a Spaza shop in Y-Block of the township while police said two more Somali nationals were shot close to another spaza shop in the area.
“Additional information has since emerged that two other victims of the shooting incidents who were taken to Tygerberg hospital and the Khayelitsha District hospital later died,” Potelwa said.
“Police have since reinforced deployments in the area. While organised crime detectives are hard at work probing multiple murder and attempted murder cases.”
