SAPS vehicle damaged after suspects fired shots

SAPS

Free State police have arrested two suspects following a business robbery at a petrol station in Welkom.

Spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng says the incident happened on Saturday when a drop safe was bombed and cash was robbed.

He says members of the Welkom K9-unit spotted the suspect's green BMW with Gauteng number plates and gave chase.

The suspects fired at the police with an AK-47 rifle, damaging the state vehicle.

Thakeng says following the incident, a 39-year-old man was hi-jacked in his silver BMW in Virginia by two armed suspects.

He says the two, aged 35 and 40 were later spotted and arrested.

They were found in possession of a firearm linked with the business robbery in Welkom and police seized the hi-jacked vehicle.

The two suspects, a foreigner and a South African, will appear in Welkom Magistrate's Court soon.

The police investigation continues.
