Free State police arrested a motorist on a double murder charge after he allegedly fired shots out of the window while spinning his car in a parking lot early on Saturday morning.
Spokesperson, Captain Josephine Rani, said members on patrol responded after hearing shots being fired in the parking area of a Chesanyama in Zamdela near Sasolburg.
She said they then spotted a Mercedes Benz, with no number plates, driving at high speed from the direction from which the shots were fired.
Captain Rani said the police pursued the speeding vehicle until they were able to intercept it.
“An unknown male alighted from the vehicle carrying a firearm and the police managed to disarm him,” she said.
Rani said police established that the suspect had been spinning his car and “randomly firing shots through the driver’s window, which led to three males being shot."
“One of the victims died on the scene, while the second succumbed to his injuries in hospital and the third victims is still in hospital receiving medical treatment,” she said.
The driver will appear in court the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on two charges of murder, one of attempted murder, discharging a firearm in a municipal area, and handling the firearm while under the influence.
The 33-year-old will also be charged with reckless and negligent driving.
