Two high school learners from the Ekurhuleni district in Gauteng died this past week after drinking poison.
Spokesperson for the Department of Education in Gauteng Steve Mabona says a matric learner from Nigel High School consumed poison at her home last week and died on her way to the hospital.
He says the second pupil, a Grade 10 learner from Geluksdal Secondary School, took her own life on Tuesday.
The news follows less than 24 hours after the body of a female learner was discovered on the rugby field at Hoërskool Garsfontein in Pretoria.
Although the cause of death of 16-year-old Mia Kühn has not yet been determined, an inquest docket has been opened.
The names of the suicide victims were not released to the media.
Mabona has called upon learners to reach out for assistance from family or friends or make use of Childline by dialling 116.
He expressed his condolences to the friends and family of the deceased in what has been described as a sombre week for the Department.
