An ex-convict is due to appear in court this week in Ekhuruleni in connection with the murders of two SAPS members in separate incidents.
Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Philani Nkwalase, said 44-year-old Mxengeni Lembethe, will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on Friday, following his arrest in Orange Farm during an intelligence-driven operation.
He said Lembethe was allegedly linked to the murder of off-duty Sergeant Gift Moloi, of Thokoza SAPS, who was gunned down during a hijacking in December 2022.
“Sergeant Moloi was off duty accompanying a friend in his private vehicle when Lembethe and his accomplices reportedly hijacked, shot, and killed Moloi, whilst a friend sustained injuries from the incident,” Nkwalase said.
He added that further investigation also linked Lembethe to another murder case investigated by Ratanda SAPS detectives, for which he is expected to appear in the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
The Hawks statement did not immediately disclose any details about Lembethe’s initial arrest and conviction and for which he had been jailed.
Further details are expected after his court appearance.
