A member of the police's Tactical Response Team has been killed in a shootout with a gang of heavily armed men who blew up a G4S cash in transit vehicle on the R75 from Vanderbijlpark towards Sasolburg in the Free State.
National police spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, says the attack on the cash vehicle occurred shortly before 10 AM on Friday.
She said when police responded to the incident they came under heavy fire, leading to the fatal wounding of a Sedibeng TRT member.
Another police officer and three security officials who sustained injuries during the attack were transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care," Mathe said.
She said the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in a White Toyota Fortuner and a Red Hyundai SUV.
Netcare 911 was one of the paramedic services to respond to the scene.
"On closer inspection, it was found that the armoured vehicle had been blown up, with money strewn all over the scene," said spokesperson, Shawn Herbst.
He said medics assessed the patients and found that three occupants from the armoured vehicle and a police officer had sustained moderate injuries.
"Sadly, a police officer had sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene," Herbst said.
Police instituted the 72-hour activation plan to trace and apprehend the suspects.
