Troops deployed to Eskom power stations

File

Eskom has confirmed that members of the Defence Force have been deployed at several power stations.

This was after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced yesterday that he had deployed the SANDF to safeguard the infrastructure.

The country's power crisis was in the spotlight at the ANC's national elective conference underway at Nasres in Johannesburg.

It also comes just days after the announcement of the resignation of Eskom CEO, Andre' de Ruyter.

Eskom spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha says troops were deployed yesterday at Majuba, Camden, Grootvlei, and Tutuka power stations.

According to President Cyril Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, a minimum of 10 soldiers would be deployed in the initial phase at each station. Further deployments are in the pipeline.

He said this was in response to the growing threat of sabotage, theft, vandalism, and corruption" at coal and diesel-powered at power generating plants.
