A 66-year-old motorist is expected due appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Monday, for knocking down two cyclists and failing to stop at the scene.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh, said the hit-and-run occurred on Wednesday night when two cyclists were hit on Forsman Street in Potchefstroom.

She said one cyclist died on the scene while the second victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.

"The police successfully traced the vehicle shortly after receiving the report, just as it was about to enter the suspect’s place. Upon inspection of the vehicle, it was found that it was damaged and had blood stains," Myburgh said.

Myburgh said the man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug with a narcotic effect, culpable homicide, and failing to stop after an accident.

North West police have issued a warning against drinking and driving.
