african leadership

Tributes streamed in for world-renowned singer Sibongile Khumalo who has died at the age of 63.

She passed away on Thursday, reportedly after a long battle with illness.

Fellow musician, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, said he was “gutted” by the death of his “dear friend.”

“I am hurting. I have no words – an absolute icon – Rest in Peace,” he tweeted.

In his tribute, UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, said Khumalo “left us with the heritage of music that will last for many generations to come.”

Khumalo was born in Orlando West in Soweto on 24 September 1957 and was “guided by her father, Khabi Mngoma” a music professor.

She obtained a BA degree in music from the University of Zululand and later read for an honours degree at Wits University.

In 2009 Rhodes University awarded Khumalo a Doctor of Music honoris causa and she also received honorary doctorates from the University of South Africa and the University of Zululand.
