The South African Police has launched a toll-free number for members of the public to report activities related to the illicit trade in cigarettes, alcohol and other counterfeit goods.
Police say illicit trade, which involves anything from medicine, beauty products, to clothing and tobacco, is one of the biggest threats to economic order and growth in South Africa.
Illicit trade robs the fiscus of taxes and by doing so impairs the government's ability to serve its citizens.
Police say it is important to note that counterfeit food also poses a health risk to consumers as the contents of the products are unknown and not verified.
