A 62-year-old Cape Town man has received a five year suspended sentence after attempting to fleece Standard Bank out of R19 million.
Hawks spokesperson, Zinzi Hani, says Gerrit Erasmus was convicted and sentenced at the Cape Town Regional Court on Wednesday.
Erasmus is believed to have applied for a home loan worth R19 million using false credentials including a fake identity document in June 2019.
Hani says following his arrest, a plea agreement was reached in which his initial sentence of two years imprisonment was suspended, on the condition that he does not commit fraud or theft during the suspension period.
He also was given an additional three years of correctional supervision.
