The TikTok #BrokenTaxiChronicles challenge has gone viral – shedding light on the alarming state of South Africa’s minibus taxis, exposing dangerous safety failures and sparking widespread concern over the public transport sector’s deteriorating condition.

The challenge has seen commuters across the country sharing shocking videos and accounts of taxis with faulty brakes, malfunctioning doors, ineffective windshield wipers, and dangerously worn tyres.

The Automobile Association (AA) has responded to the social media outcry, calling for urgent intervention to remove unsafe taxis from the roads before more lives are put at risk.

@nqobilehamca Here we got stuck because we were too heavy for the taxi and what made matters worse, we were on a steep road????‍??????.#tiktoksouthafrica #fyp #taxichronicles ? original sound - Sandisiwe Mathamo

Safety concerns have long plagued South Africa’s public transport system, but the viral trend has amplified the issue, prompting renewed pressure on authorities.

The AA warns that unroadworthy taxis endanger not only passengers but also other road users.

“The roadworthiness of a vehicle is not just a legal requirement; it is a fundamental moral obligation. No commuter should have to risk their life simply to get to work, school, or home,” it says.

The association has outlined key measures that need to be taken to address the crisis:

  • Transport authorities: The AA is calling for stricter and more frequent roadworthiness checks on taxis, ensuring that unsafe vehicles are swiftly removed from the roads;
  • Taxi operators: Operators must prioritise regular maintenance to comply with essential safety standards, including ensuring that brakes, lights, and tyres are in working condition; and
  • Passengers: Commuters are urged to report unroadworthy taxis to the relevant authorities to help drive systemic change.

“Public transport is the backbone of mobility for millions of South Africans,” the AA adds. “It is imperative that we transform this system into one that prioritises safety, reliability, and accountability.”

With #BrokenTaxiChronicles continuing to trend online, pressure is mounting on authorities and taxi associations to act decisively in addressing the safety concerns of commuters.

The AA has reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for safer roads and better enforcement of transport regulations.
