Six police officials attached to the Khayelitsha detective service in the Western Cape have been arrested after they allegedly submitted false financial documents to the tune of more than R16,000.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said five of the six suspects – who are between the ages of 31 and 41 – were arrested on Wednesday morning when they reported for duty.

The sixth police officer was later arrested at his place of residence in Khayelitsha.

Captain Van Wyk, who said the police officials would face 26 charges of fraud, explaned how the cops allegedly defrauded the police department.

“According to our records, the members travelled to Eastern Cape for investigation between January 2022 and September 2022,” Captain Van Wyk said, “and on their return [allegedly] submitted fraudulent claims for subsistence and travelling allowance to the total amount of R16 065.”

He said allegations revealed that they would [allegedly] pay for accommodation and then request a receipt with a higher amount as paid.

It was also believed that members would share a room, but then request two separate receipts.

Captain Van Wyk said one of the members also faced a charge of defeating the administration of justice on another Khayelitsha case after he allegedly failed to arrange the travel and accommodation arrangements for a witness in a pending murder case.

“After thorough investigations by the anti-corruption unit, the docket was presented to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) who decided to charge the members on 26 counts of fraud and one count of defeating the administration of Justice.”

They are expected to appear in court on Thursday.
