A police reservist and two security guards were shot and critically wounded in an armed robbery at Carnival City on the East Rand early on Monday morning.
Police say a group of gunmen entered the casino just after midnight and headed straight to the vault.
The men ordered the casino patrons to lie on the floor and then used a hammer and a grinder to open the vault, and removed an undisclosed amount of cash.
A shoot-out ensued, in which the reservist and security guards were wounded.
ER24 cited witnesses as saying there were about 25 men in the gang of robbers.
