Free State police have opened an inquest docket, following the death of three children in Qwa Qwa who allegedly ate rat poison.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says they were informed by the 39-year old mother that she went to a shop on Friday and left the children in the care of the oldest child, aged 16.
He says she further alleged that on her arrival, she found two children, aged four and 11, already dead while the 16-year old was still alive but passed away shortly after EMS personnel arrived.
Makhele says the poison wasn't found in the room where the deceased was lying, but traces thereof were found in an outside room.
A postmortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
