Thousands of empty cough syrup bottles found at known drug dens

Reaction Unit SA (Facebook)

Several thousand empty bottles of cough syrup were discovered in the Verulam CBD just north of Durban on Sunday.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) says the bottles were found under bridges, unused railway lines and drains along the R102.

These areas are frequently used by drug addicts and suspect use it as a hide-out.

RUSA officers made enquiries at local pharmacies and were informed that the cough syrup was a cheap over-the-counter (OTC) drug.

The cough syrups contain Dextromethorphan which replaces codeine in over-the-counter cold and flu medication and is an easy and cheap way of getting high.

The South African Health Products Authority (SAHPRA) only regulates the non-medicinal use of codeine-containing medicines.
