Rhino poaching suspects arrested after tourist raises the alarm

Three alleged rhino poachers are due to appear in court after being arrested in Kruger National Park on Friday.

Police in Mbombela said the arrests were made after a tourist reported hearing gunshots in the Park.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said poachers allegedly killed a total of four rhinos before the field rangers caught them.

He said after park officials received the report of gunshots a helicopter was immediately dispatched to the scene where three Mozambican nationals were spotted and apprehended.

Mohlala said they were found to be in the possession of a hunting rifle, a silencer, three knives, four mobile phones three bags, while three rhino horns were found during the arrests.

He said the horn on the fourth animal had not yet been removed as the suspects had been caught.

Mohlala said the trio also faced a charge of contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa.

He said police could not rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the suspects.
