The National Sea Rescue Institute reported the tragic deaths of two women who were swept off the harbour wall at Old Harbour in Hermanus on Sunday.
The NSRI said their Hermanus duty crew was activated shortly after 3 pm following eye-witness reports of two persons appearing to be lifeless and floating in the water.
Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said on arrival on the scene the adult women, aged 60 and 62 from Ceres, were located and brought onto the rescue craft.
He said CPR efforts commenced and the women were brought to the rescue station where paramedics continued with Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.
“Sadly, after efforts to resuscitate the two females were exhausted, they were declared deceased by paramedics. The SA Police Services were activated and an inquest docket has been opened,” he said.
Lambinon conveyed a message of condolence from the NSRI to the families of the deceased.
