Johannesburg Emergency Services have confirmed the recovery of the body of 6-year-old Khaya Magadla.
The boy’s body was found by rescue workers 20 days after he fell down a manhole in Dlamini, Soweto.
The 6-year-old is said to have been playing with friends when he fell into the hole.
Rescue and recovery teams, comprising more than 90 members, searched for Khaya.
The team covered at least 20 kilometers from Dlamini to Eldorado Park, combing through different sewer systems.
“Khayalethu Magadla was recovered from the splitter chamber on the first manhole situated at Eldorado Park Waste Plant,” says spokesperson Nana Radebe.
Authorities have since vowed to close open manholes in Johannesburg in a bid to prevent a reoccurrence of such a tragedy.
