Thirteen arrested for firing shots at funerals

Police arrested 13 people at two separate funerals at the weekend for allegedly discharging firearms.

Eight suspects have already appeared in court in Richmond after their arrest at the local cemetery.

The men were attending the funeral of an alleged crime boss who was kidnapped and murdered along with his friend.

The eight suspects were all for firing shots inside a car which was spinning inside the cemetery.

Police recovered one firearm with its serial numbers filed off.

On Tuesday, another five men appeared in the Mkhulu Magistrates' Court in Mpumalanga after they too fired several shots at a funeral in Belfast near Hazyview.

Brigadier Leonard Htlathi says the men were driving past mourners when they leaned out the window and fired shotscausing widespread panic and mayhem.

The suspects' vehicle was later found parked outside a tavern where the arrests were made.
Brigadier Hlathi says two firearms were recovered.

 

The five men were remanded in custody until Monday when they are expected to apply for bail.
