Ten people who were drinking at a tavern in Vanstadensrus in the Free State on Sunday was shot and wounded by robbers.
A police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlahti says it is alleged that earlier on Sunday evening a police car driving in the area was shot at and officers soon realised that there was a robbery in progress at a nearby tuckshop.
He says the suspects then fled to a tavern and fired random shots before leaving the scene.
Hlathi says two victims were rushed to hospital whilst seven others went to the police station, each having sustained a gunshot wound.
He says a tenth victim was taken to hospital in a private vehicle.
