Teachers’ union SADTU has strongly condemned the “anarchy” that ensued at a Workers Day rally in Rustenburg where President Cyril Ramaphosa was booed and the event eventually abandoned.
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union, an affiliate of COSATU, said it also distanced itself from the unruly behaviour at Monday's event.
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa was scheduled to address Cosatu’s main Workers’ Day celebrations at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg when angry miners stormed the stage, demanding that he must leave.
Members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have been on strike at Sibanye-Stillwater for the past seven weeks.
They want an increase of R1 000 for surface and underground miners and 6% for artisans, miners, and officials
But the company said it could only afford to pay R850 - an offer that was rejected by the unions.
Ramaphosa promised the workers he would engage the company in an attempt to resolve the strike.
SADTU secretary-general, Mugewena Maluleke, said they believe “that either COSATU or its affiliates” have been infiltrated by “populists and demagogues” pursuing their own personal agendas.
