Teacher unions rail against matric decision

Teachers’ union Naptosa said it was seeking an urgent meeting with the Minister of Basic Education.

This followed an announcement on Thursday that matric learners who test positive for Covid19 may still write their exams but at a separate venue.

This followed an agreement between the Departments of Health and Basic Education.

Naptosa President, Basil Manuel said they view the decision as unlawful and unreasonable, saying members who refuse to comply, would have the union’s backing.

However, he said that Naptosa members who choose to make contact with Covid19 positive learners, do so at their own risk.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union, Sadtu, also said that was “wrong” of the Department of Basic Education to allow learners infected with Covid19 to write their exams on school property.

Sadtu said that it had no say in the decision which violated safety protocols and has also requested a meeting with the Departments of Health and Basic Education.

More than 1 million learners are currently sitting for the 2020 National Senior Certificate Exams which conclude on 15 December.
