Suspect shot dead by driver in latest "spikes" incident

Spikes placed on the road by robbers in Gauteng

SAPS

A suspect who tried to rob a couple changing a flat tyre in the northern Pretoria suburb of Akasia has been shot dead by the driver.

Police say the car had pulled over after driving over spikes placed on the road.

Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo says the husband was busy changing the tyre while his wife was standing on the side of the road when three suspects approached and started shooting at them.

He says the husband, who had a licensed firearm, fired back and hit one of the suspects in the upper body.

His body was later found by paramedics who certified him dead at the scene.

The latest incident, last Friday,  took place on the R80 highway in Akasia after similar incidents previously - predominantly on the N4 highway and R566.

Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said as soon as a hotspot is identified the criminals' just move to another location.
