The National Energy Regulator has heard that as many as 35 000 people in the sugar cane industry could lose their jobs if Eskom is granted a 16% electricity increase.
The SA Cane Growers' Association made a submission to a Nersa public hearing in Durban on Thursday on the Eskom proposal for a multi-year tariff increase.
The Association says should the electricity tariff hike be granted, the sugar cane industry could lose nearly 20% of its R10b a year turn-over and also put jobs at risk.
