Striking miners clash with police at Implats mine

Police reinforcements have been called in to Impala Platinum's Rustenburg operations.

This after clashes last night left one person dead and a policewoman and several civilians injured.

Police spokesperson, brigadier Tulani Ngubane, says a man who was beaten up and stripped, died in an ambulance en route to hospital.

He says this morning about 5 000 people, believed to be part of the group of over 17 000 miners who were fired for going on an illegal strike, were "running up and down the streets outside the mine.

They allegedly also set fire to the disused Freedom Park Satellite police station.

Ngubane says the situation is volatile and that reinforcements have been called in from other parts of North West.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Mineworkers says it will be talking to miners and the company about the violence.

NUM spokesperson, Lesiba Seshoka, says the mine has started rehiring workers who were fired for going on an illegal strike but have been allowed to reapply for their jobs.
