The Department of Correctional Services says it has moved an inmate at St Alban's Prison in Gqeberha to a Special Care Unit after he was bust with a cell phone which is considered contraband in jail.
Department spokesperson, Singabhako Nxumalo, said in a statement on Tuesday that the phone was confiscated from the inmate who used it to “flamboyantly post his image on social media.”
“The identified inmate is incarcerated at St Albans Correctional facility in the Eastern Cape Region and he has been moved to a Special Care Unit for the purposes of an investigation and will be formally charged,” he said.
Nxumalo said mobile phones are defined as contraband in Correctional Centres and hence illegal access and usage is a punishable offence.
He said the inmate will also face other charges.
The Department of Correctional Services said it was “deeply incensed by this behaviour” and promised strong action and consequences.
