Dam overflows at Jagersfontein mine - weeks after tragedy

OFM

Clarity has been given after several reports that another dam wall at the Jagersfontein Development Project (JDP) mine in the Free State has collapsed, days after being declared a disaster area.

It is alleged that a water dam, and not a silt dam, has overflowed after heavy rain in the area.

Kopanong mayor, Xolani Tseletsele, says the incident could have been a result of earlier heavy downpours in the area.

The water is running through the neighbourhood of Charlesville and Dennis Louw's farm, which is nearby.

The R706 near Charlesville has been closed.

Motorists are advised to use an alternative gravel road to Fauresmith to get access to Jagersfontein.

On Sunday 11 September 2022, the mine dam’s wall collapsed, releasing tons of silt which killed one person, injured scores and left many residents of Itumeleng and Charleslville destitute or homeless.

Two people are still missing whilst infrastructure and property damage of both residents and the said municipality are running into millions of rands.

Both the national and provincial governments have promised to help the residents rebuild their lives.

This is a developing story.
