A man from Springbok in the Northern Cape appeared in the local Magistrates Court on Tuesday on a double attempted murder charge.

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mojalefa Senokoatsane says during his appearance, the court heard that the two victims had passed away and the charge was changed to murder.

He says 59-year-old Japie Claassens allegedly shot two people who were at his home on the 31st of October.

Senokoatsane says shortly after the two victims were shot, Claassens went to the police station to report the incident.

He says when police arrived at his home both men were in critical condition and rushed to a hospital in Upington for medical assistance.

The victims have since been identified as 54-year-old Coenraad de Beer and 56-year-old James Kriel.

The NPA says it is alleged that one victim was shot while asleep.

The matter was postponed to the 15th of November for a possible bail application.
