A convicted rapist has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he killed his friend during a violent argument.
Thabiso Mojapelo, 37, who is also a convicted robber, was sentenced in the Johannesburg Magistrates court this week.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng Phindi Mjonondwane says Mojapelo and the victim committed a crime on the 18th of April 2022, and the agreement was for profits of their loot to be shared.
She says the day after the crime, Mojapelo went to his friend's home in Riverpark where an argument broke out.
Mojapelo went to the kitchen and fetched a knife which he concealed in his jacket, while the argument continued.
Mjonondwane says Mojapelo then grabbed the knife and stabbed his friend 35 times before covering his body with a blanket.
She says he fled the scene with the deceased's belongings and car, before eventually handing himself over to police.
During the trial, Mojapelo pleaded guilty to the charges against him and was sentenced to a further 10 years in prison for theft.
The NPA says at the time of the murder, Mojapelo was out on parole for robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape.
