Police intercepted and arrested members of a heavily armed gang making their way to Kwazulu Natal to carry out cash-in-transit robberies.
National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, commended police who intercepted the gang in Vrede in the Free State on Tuesday.
Police said they were following up on intelligence information about a planned cash-in-transit heist which resulted in a shootout ensued with the suspects.
"Unfortunately, a 40-year-old security officer was shot and killed when the suspects who were travelling in a Dodge sedan opened fire," said Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
She said two suspects were injured, while police recovered an AK47 and an R5 rifle with more than 240 rounds of high-calibre ammunition.
"Another group of suspects were intercepted in Memela about 52km from Vrede. Three suspects were arrested and some got away," Mathe said.
Police launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects.
