The Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modise made a brief appearance in the Potchefstroom Magistrates court on Monday where she is facing charges of animal abuse.
She is privately being prosecuted by Advocate Gerrie Nel who is head of Afriforum's Private Prosecution Unit.
Nel is acting on behalf of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA).
In 2014 the NSPCA laid charges against Modise after an inspection on her farm revealed that dozens of animals had allegedly died from neglect.
The animal welfare organisation at the time described the scene on Modise's property as one of the cruellest cases of animal abuse it had come across.
NSPCA spokesperson, Grace de Lange, said Modise’s farm was littered with the carcasses of over 50 pigs and other dead animals, such as geese, ducks, sheep, and goats.
The case was postponed to the 30th of October when Modise is expected to plea.
