A South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier who was positively identified as being visibly drunk in a viral video has been demoted.
Reserve Force member Corporal P.N. Ngcobo was arrested at the Thaba Tshwane military base in Tshwane on the 21st of August and kept in custody at the Military Detention Barracks until his court appearance last week.
The soldier appeared before a military judge and was charged under the Military Disciplinary Code (MDC), section 45(a.)-Unseemly Conduct.
He was found guilty and sentenced to a reduction in rank from Corporal to Lance Corporal.
Ngcobo had also gone AWOL for almost a month and was arrested at the base a day after a statement about his conduct was issued.
A spokesperson for the SANDF Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi earlier condemned the video showing one of their members drunk in uniform and in public.
He called Ngcobo's behaviour disgraceful.
The Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya said no act of ill-discipline or criminality will be tolerated or go unpunished in the military regardless of rank or position.
