The South African National Defence Force has confirmed that six soldiers have died and three others sustained second-degree burn wounds in a fire at the South African Army Combat Training Centre in the Northern Cape.
It says the fire spread from the western border of a mine next to the training area on Friday.
The SANDF says in a statement elements of the SA Army are currently deployed in the vicinity in preparation for its annual Exercise Vukuhlome.
The names of the deceased will be released once the next of kin has been informed.
The SANDF says firefighters are doing everything in their power to extinguish the fire which has resulted in destroying camping equipment and vehicles.
It says it is currently assessing the situation on the ground and further information regarding this incident will be communicated in due course as the investigation is still under way.
