At least six people were killed and 9 others were injured in a head-on collision on the N8 near Botshabelo in the Free State on Saturday evening.
ER24's Inneke van Huysteen says paramedics arrived at the scene and found a light motor vehicle in the road while a bakkie was lying on its side a few metres away.
She says five people, among them two children and a baby, were declared dead at the scene, while a young child, who had sustained critical injuries, was airlifted to hospital but died shortly after arrival.
The injured were treated at the scene and transported to various hospitals for further medical care.
The cause of the accident is not known and local authorities are investigating.
