DA wants Home Affairs Minister to account for Bushiri “escape”

The Democratic Alliance wants Home Affairs Minister, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, to account to Parliament for the disappearance of the fugitive couple, Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary.

They are believed to have fled to Malawi after failing to comply with their bail conditions by reporting regularly to the police.

The self-proclaimed prophet and his wife, as well as several accomplices, face charges of fraud and money-laundering involving an amount of R102 million.

They were recently granted bail of R200 000 each.

DA MP and spokesperson on Home Affairs, Angel Khanyile, said Minister Motsoaledi should appear before Parliament to account for Home Affairs’ “abject failure” to effectively manage South Africa’s ports of entry and departure.

She wants the Minister to tell South Africa how Bushiri was granted South African citizenship and how they escaped without passports considering that their documents were supposedly handed over to authorities when they were granted bail.

“The fact that two individuals wanted for grave crimes have managed to flee our country so effortlessly is a slap in the face to the millions of South African citizens deserving of swift justice for this crime,” Khanyile said.

She said the government must urgently begin the process to extradite Bushiri to South Africa.
