The South African National Blood Service says it is facing severe blood stock shortages countrywide.
The current stocks are on 2.1 days.
In a statement appealing to all potential donors, the Blood Service says the current weather conditions and a higher than usual demand for blood have sent stocks plummetting.
National spokesperson Thandi Mosupye says whenever blood stocks drop below three days, it places the lives of patients at risk.
She says they need to collect 3 500 units of blood a day.
