SADTU threatens legal action over rewrite of matric papers

Teachers' union, Sadtu is threatening legal action, after the Department of Basic Education decided that two matric papers should be rewritten.

Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Friday that Maths Paper Two should be rewritten on 15 December and Physical Sciences Paper Two on 17 December after these papers were earlier leaked.

Sadtu's secretary-general, Mugwena Maluleke, says only about 200 of the more than 390,000 matrics had access to the leaked papers, and that does not justify rewriting the papers.

He says the department consulted with the unions and Sadtu and the majority of them said they were against the decision and that consensus had been reached.

However, Maluleke says the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi, did not agree and the decision to rewrite the two papers was taken afterwards.

He says they will file an urgent court application to interdict the Department’s decision on Monday.
