The Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced the country's first two deaths from the Coronavirus.
Mkhize said in a brief statement that he woke up to the sad news of the two deaths, which occurred in the Western Cape.
One patient died in a private hospital and another in a public hospital.
He says more information will be communicated to the public in due course.
Minister Mkhize added that the number of infections has surpassed the 1 000 mark overnight.
The Western Cape on Thursday had 229 cases of Covid-19.
