A police constable who graduated from the academy in December last year was stabbed to death in Gauteng on Thursday.
National spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidu says the Constable was in hot pursuit of two alleged drug dealers and managed to corner one of them.
He says the suspect, however, managed to overpower the policeman and fatally stabbed him in the chest, before taking his service pistol and firing a shot.
Naidu says the other members heard the shot and fired towards the suspect.
The man fell to the ground and was found with a bloodied knife. The deceased's service pistol was also recovered.
The National police commissioner conveyed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, who was only 32-years-old.
The suspect was arrested in will appear in court soon.
