KZN security guard shot dead in foiled CIT robbery

Police in Hibberdene on the KZN south coast have arrested four men linked to an attempted cash-in-transit robbery in which a guard was killed.

Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili says it is alleged that a group of heavily armed men engaged in a shoot-out with security guards, who were about to offload cash at an ATM.

During the crossfire, one guard sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on the scene.

Muridili says two other guards sustained a gunshot wound to their leg and shoulder, respectively.

She says the driver of the cash delivery van sped away from the scene in the direction of the N2 freeway.

The robbers also fled the scene, empty-handed.

Muridili says within hours they managed to arrest four of the suspects and also recovered their getaway vehicle, which was lying in a ditch next to the N2 freeway near Port Shepstone.

Police also recovered three rifles and a pistol during the arrest.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
