Ramaphosa puts the brakes on salary hikes

Government Ministers and Deputy Ministers are among a raft of state officials who will not receive salary hikes this financial year.

In a bold move, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Saturday that he would not be following the recommendation of the Remuneration Commission for a 4% salary increase for all office bearers.

Instead, he decreed that there will be no increases for the Deputy President, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, as well as the Speaker and the Chairperson of the NCOP and their Deputies.

Provincial Premiers, MEC’s and Speakers will also not receive any salary increases but Members of the Provincial Executive (MPL’s) will receive 2.5%.

Magistrates will benefit from a 4% salary adjustment while Kings and Queens will be eligible for a 2% increase.

“President Ramaphosa’s decision not to follow the Commission’s recommendations was informed by the imperative that the state be considerate, responsive and demonstrate restraint, especially during periods of economic hardship,” the Presidency said.
