Bodies are piling up in morgues across the country.
The Department of Health has revealed that 143 mortuary fridges in 80 districts across the country were not functioning properly.
Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, reportedly made the startling announcement in Parliament this week, prompting the Public Servants Association to threaten to withdraw its members if the situation was not urgently addressed.
PSA spokesperson, Tahir Sema says if the Minister does not do something soon they will be forced to withdraw their staff as they cannot allow their members to work in hazardous conditions where there is no compliance to the health and safety act.
He says although this is a national problem, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and the North West Province were the worst affected.
Sema says hospital across the country needs serious maintenance on mortuary fridges.
According to the PSA some fridges been dysfunctional for eight years, without any efforts by the Department to rectify the situation.
