The United National Transport Union has congratulated the Hawks for arresting Transnet employees on charges related to copper theft.
The four are due to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today (FRI).
UNTU spokesperson, Steve Harris, said they were disappointed to learn that the suspects implicated in the R1.9 million rand theft, are state employees.
The alleged theft occurred at Transnet Infrastructure Freight Rail Koedoespoort in Pretoria.
“If you steal from your employer, you are placing the jobs of every colleague at risk. The law must take its cause,” Harris said.
Freightnews.co.za quoted Transnet as saying that the arrests followed the earlier arrest of two suspects a week ago who were caught transporting “a truckload” of copper cables to a scrap metal facility.
It said this arrest led to the arrest of two more suspects and the discovery of a wooden drum containing new and unused copper cables from Transnet.
“Further investigation revealed that the suspects worked with some Transnet employees, who were then arrested yesterday (Weds),” the Transnet statement said.
