A 33-year-old woman appeared in a Durban court on Thursday for allegedly defrauding the government’s Temporary Employee Relief Scheme of over R2.6 million.
Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, said Nana Mbuto was arrested on Tuesday.
“Mbuto stands accused of falsely applying for TERS funds from the Department of Labour amounting to just over R2.6 million since April 2020. She reportedly used particulars of two entities, Sandy & Sissy Trading and Narrow Road Trading Projects,” Mogale said.
She said it was further alleged that Mbuto submitted a fabricated list of employees and colluded a Department official, who has yet to be arrested, to unduly benefit from the TERS’ Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).
Mogale said Mbuto appeared in the Durban Commercial Crime Court where the matter was postponed to 4 March for a formal bail application.
