The Automobile Association (AA) says motorists should not expect the cost of driving to come down any time soon.
It says the 27 cents per litre fuel levy hike which comes into effect in April will only hurt pockets further.
The increase was announced by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni during the tabling of his budget in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
The AA's Layton Beard says what's more worrying is the levy's knock-on effect.
He said it is not only going to hit motorists, but it's also going to hit all consumers because invariably public transport will go up.
Beard said the AA was concerned about the increase as all consumer goods will also go up because manufacturers and suppliers in the agricultural sector pass on any increases that they will have to input costs to consumers.
