The South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights (SAPOHR) says the prisoner who stabbed Janusz Walus earlier this week has gone on a hunger strike.
The spokesperson for the non-profit organisation Golden Miles Bhudu says they were reliably informed that inmate Mandla Madonsela has gone on a hunger strike, demanding to meet with the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola.
He says Madonsela demands a detailed explanation of the fate of dozens of prisoners who are eligible for parole and who are still in custody.
The prisoner is currently in solitary confinement at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria.
According to the Sowetan newspaper, Madonsela is a former South African Defence Force Sergeant who is serving a life sentence for killing a Lieutenant Colonel at the airforce base in 2007.
The paper further reports that Madonsela went on a hunger strike in 2018 when he was not allowed to attend his sister's funeral.
Walus was stabbed on Tuesday, a day before he was set to be released on parole after serving 29 years in prison for killing the leader of the South African Communist Party, Chris Hani in 1993 while the country was transitioning into democracy.
Walus is still in custody receiving medical treatment.
