The Hawks have arrested a 27-year-old suspect and confiscated copper valued at more than R50 million in Pretoria.
Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Noloyiso Rwexana says members of their Tactical Operations Management Section received information about a syndicate allegedly involved in various criminal activities, including dealing and selling copper.
The members swooped on a property in Booysens on Friday and the owner indicated that he bought copper at an auction in Bloemfontein.
He produced a second-hand goods dealer permit and claimed that he was authorised to deal in copper.
Rwexana says the man was informed that he needed to be in possession of a certificate allowing him to possess copper as per the Criminal Matters Amendment Act of 2015.
The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday.
