The National Press Club has defended its decision to choose the South African rhino as last year's news maker of the year.
Press club chairperson Antoinette Slabbert says the decision had been discussed in depth and that Marikana had been considered, but that the committee had to consider who had made the most news throughout the entire year.
The club was criticised over the weekend for its decision, by among others its former chairman Yusuf Abramjee.
Several people commented on social media.
One of these was from spin doctor Chris Vick who commented: "AON provides insurance cover for rhino. AON sponsors NPC News maker of the Year. Rhino declared news maker of the year. Join the dots."
