The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating an incident in which well-known soapie actor, Patrick Shai, was wounded.
IPID said Shai, of 7 de Laan fame, sustained multiple injuries after being hit by rubber bullets during a protest in Soweto on Monday.
“It is reported that some Dobsonville residents took to the streets and started protesting against the disconnection of electricity in their area on Monday, 11 November 2019 before midday,” IPID said in a statement.
According to the statement, Shai was not with the protesters but as a resident of the area, had tried to intervene.
IPID said while attempting to mediate it is alleged that the police started firing at the residents with rubber bullets and Shai was hit several times.
There were also unconfirmed reports that other residents were injured during the incident.
IPID said a written statement was obtained from Shai on Tuesday and a case docket registered and taken over by them for further investigation.
